The power of our skin's invisible microworld

A healthy microbiome means beautiful and healthy skin!

What is a microbiome?

The microbiome is nothing more than the invisible microworld on our skin, which consists of: bacteria, fungi, mites and viruses. Sounds scary, but it turns out that they are there for a reason and have a huge impact on the condition and functioning of our skin, and indirectly the entire immune system. The term microbiome was first used in 2001, since then, a great deal of research into this phenomenon has started. Today, we’ve learned a lot about the microbiome.

Now, more than ever we need to be taking care of the microbiome, and doing what we can to prevent viruses and infections from entering our bodies.

The first line of defense

The skin is our largest organ. It not only plays an aesthetic role, but also helps to maintain the balance of our body. It is the first line of defense against the outside world, against pathogenic microorganisms and the influence of harmful substances.

The microbiome also has a significant impact on the condition of our skin. When there are abnormalities in the microbiome many skin concerns can be identified including: acne vulgaris and rosacea, skin allergies, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Disturbances in the microbiome may also affect the incorrect process of exfoliation and renewal of the epidermis, as well as the tendency for excessive skin dryness resulting in being more susceptible to infection.

Skin - a hostile environment

Due to its structure and functioning, the skin is not a very friendly environment for the development of microorganisms. The constant exfoliation of the epidermis, its dryness, and the presence of a hydrolipid coat with a lowered pH prevent microorganisms from freely multiplying and growing. On the one hand, this is advantageous as it only allows the existence of certain species of microorganisms. On the other hand, when certain factors occur (poor diet, inadequate care, certain diseases and medications), the microbiome and its protective functions can easily be disturbed.

Care for the microbiome

Bearing in mind how delicate our skin microbiome is, it is worth taking care of it properly. In addition to preventing viruses and bacteria from entering our bodies through our skin, there has been an increased focus on skin health, as more business meetings are occurring over the computer, vs. in person. You might be able to wear sweat pants to a Zoom meeting, but your skin is front and center! This is the skin’s time to shine!

First, it is necessary to use mild cleansers. They should contain substances that gently cleanse the skin without disturbing its hydrolipid layer. Hydrating Facial Cleanser is mild, so you don’t need to worry about stripping the skin while still getting it clean.

Second, exfoliates should be used in moderation. This applies to both chemical, mechanical and enzymatic peels. Too aggressive or frequent removal of the cells of the stratum corneum is associated with a temporary disturbance of the microbiome, which may result in drying out or increasing skin irritation. Gentle Gommage Exfoliator is a great solution for gentle exfoliation, but still should only be used 1-2 times weekly.

Third, it is worth choosing cosmetics that support and rebuild the microbiome. There are complexes of probiotics and prebiotics that simulate the growth and multiplication of the desired microorganisms.

Our Duo-biotic Complex is an extremely gentle complex of prebiotics and probiotics to support your skin’s microbiome. This combination will preserve the natural defensive barrier of your skin and protect it from damage, keeping your immune system in check and reducing inflammation. Duo-Biotic Complex eliminates dryness and redness making your skin calm, well balanced, radiant and strong. You will find it in our Rejuvenating Moisturizer, Ultra-light Moisturizer and Smoothing Eye Cream.
